Photoshop CS4 question: How do i fade an image into another image?

With photoshop, you can use gradients to fade an image into a solid color. This is very useful, however I have seen images and animations where it looks like multi-colored images have been faded into other multi-colored images. This seems impossible to do with the stock photoshop cs4 gradients. If there is a way to do this with photoshop, please let me know, if not, can you suggest a program that has a feature like this?

Thanks in advance for your answers.Photoshop CS4 question: How do i fade an image into another image?
I am not exactly sure what you are asking but to have images fade out or in you need to use the animation tools.

Once your there you can either change the layer occupancy a little down each time you make a new key in the animation bar. Or you can choose the gradient with one side color and the other side checkerboard like which has the effect of having part of the image there and the rest fading out to the image behind it on another layer.

Hope this helps if not just search for a tutorial along the lines of the title of your question.

I'm under the impression that it has something to do with rendering but what exactly is feathering, what's its purpose, tips/tricks, etc? What exactly is feathering in Photoshop?
Feathering is softening the outer edge of something. You could trace around something or draw something, then soften the edge of it by how many pixels you want. You can select a part or a border with the magic wand %26amp; feather it from there. I really dont use it much, just use the blur setting at softening.

In the example, there is no change in brush color. There is a gradient applied to the stroke (outline) of the text and, I believe, a layer applied over all the elements of the image (meaning the very top layer) with a white to transparent gradient applied. White on the bottom, transparent on the top. Then the Opacity of this layer is reduced so that below can be seen. Change in Blending mode might also be involved. How can I make one part of a picture colored and the rest of it black and white with adobe photoshop elements?

I would really love to be able to do this so any help would be greatly appreciated! How can I make one part of a picture colored and the rest of it black and white with adobe photoshop elements?
Since you specified your software, I can answer you. Thanks.

This is one way that you can do it in Photoshop Elements. Maybe this is helpful for other image editors as well. It would be helpful to print this out and follow along. It's easy to do, but you must do the steps in order. Perhaps your own image editor has similar commands. If not, you might want to add details or post a new question to tell us what software you will be using.

    1. Open the image you wish to alter.

    2. Save the image using a different name than the original name so that you don't lose your original.

    3. Use any selection tool you wish to outline the object whose color you wish to preserve. The Magnetic Lasso Tool is pretty quick, but the regular Lasso Tool might be more precise.

3-A. Use the erase tool to erase any color that you do NOT wish to preserve.

    4. Hit [CTRL]+[C] to copy the selection.

    5. Hit [SHIFT]+[CTRL]+[N] to make a new blank layer.

(Name it if you want, but you can accept ';Layer 1.';)

    6. Hit [CTRL]+[V] to place the selection in the blank layer.

    7. Move back to the background layer by clicking on that layer in the layers palette. (on the right of your screen)

    8. Hit [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[U] to remove all color.

8-A. ALTERNATE APPROACH No. 1: Hit [CTRL]+[U] and use sliders to desaturate, leaving a hint of color present.

8-B. ALTERNATE APPROACH No. 2: Use a ';Convert to Black and White'; utility, if your software offers this. In Photoshop Elements, the command is [ALT]+[CTRL]+[B].

    9. Hit [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[E] to merge the layers.

    10. Save your work. How can I make one part of a picture colored and the rest of it black and white with adobe photoshop elements?
This works on most programs, use quick select and phobocotican and filter multi-dye and then show it to the filter of photocopy and them use the print ctrl button and then simplify layers.

What's a good camera to choose if I'm going to photoshop all the pictures?

I've been thinking about getting a professional camera but I'm not sure what camera to get if I'm using it for photoshop. What's a good camera to choose if I'm going to photoshop all the pictures?
The brand and model is a decision only you can make but, if you are wanting to photoshop get a camera that supports (shoots in) RAW . This way you have total control in a photo editing program. What's a good camera to choose if I'm going to photoshop all the pictures?
Your question can be taken in different ways...

If you want to know what would be sufficient because you will modify your pictures to some extreme measures.

Example: editing your pictures into cartoon like pictures. Then any type of camera should be good enough.

If you want to know the minimum editing power the camera needs to have because you are going to enhance the image quality in Adobe Photoshop then you should specify what use you are going to need that camera for.

Example: Do you want to simply document the life and times of your pet, family and friends or do you fancy yourself to become a digital artist?

The end result is not always about the image resolution. How much resolution you need to satisfy your objective can not be overlooked neither. The resolution will determine how much information the camera can capture as you take your picture.

The best detailed output is what you should really look at as a final choice. The camera with the highest mega-pixels might be useless if it is so slow that pictures come out blurry when taking pictures of someone in action. A good ';shake reduction system'; should be incorporated in the camera software as well.

If the camera has a bad automatic focus then you are not going to like the end result even if your camera has a 1000 megapixels super fast burst CMOS sensor. Photoshop cannot adjust the focus of a picture.

Yes, I know it's allot to look at and as specially when we don't know what to look for in a camera. As I said earlier, your need is what will justify your purchase. Do you need to take 60 and up to 1200 pictures a second to capture the perfect picture of a humming bird? In that case I would recommend the Casio EXILIM Pro EX-F1. But you will be limited to 6 mega pixels. (still very high quality image should I say)

Personally, I would aim at a very well rounded digital camera such as the Canon EOS 450D - Digital Rebel XSi with great features such as 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor DIGIC III Image Processor.

    http://www.digitalcamerastyle.com/canon-eos-450d-digital-camera.

Look around in Digital Camera Style web site. Not only does it offer reviews and sample pictures taken with the digital cameras but you can also compare the prices for the same camera offered by different sites. You might even see one that is for sale at auction for a fraction of the retail sale price. Worth a look and lots of information there.

    Good luck

Is there any free software applications to edit digital photos, similar to photoshop or lightromm etc?

Can anyone recommend any websites that provide FREE software like Adobe lightroom/photo shop etc. I know Adobe's products are very good but i dont have the money to purchase them at the moment and wondered if there is anything similar on the web thats free to use but give the same effects? Is there any free software applications to edit digital photos, similar to photoshop or lightromm etc?
If you are a student you can buy Lightroom in the student store for $99. Spending all the time learning how to use a ';free'; program and then later switching to something else is a real waste of your time, since the learning curve is about the same, no matter which program you use. Better to spend the time learning one program and spend the rest of it being creative.

There is a reason the superior, commercial products are purchased by those interested in doing post production on their images. Quality and flexibility are two that stand out as important features of any product used in photography.

If free programs were that good, Adobe, Corel and others would have go out of business long ago.Is there any free software applications to edit digital photos, similar to photoshop or lightromm etc?

    Photoshop?

    I have photoshop CS3,

whenever I use it and upload the photoshoped

pictures up on Myspace they become

    blurry. Why does this happen?Photoshop?
Im not sure, maybe you should try to reduce the resolution to 72. Thats standard for the web and then try to export it under File%26gt;Save for web%26gt; ( then save it as a jpeg, gif, png. etc.) That should help. But there could be a possibility of over retouching to the point that its blurry and more noticable on myspace. Or you could be working from a file that is smaller than 72 resolution and then trying to enlarge it, which would also cause blurriness. Hope that helps.Photoshop?
Photos too big, too much resolution. Resolution, dpi, should be twice the size of the photo. Try to get the photo the exact measurements of the space it will go into.
    check the resolution

    Photoshop ???????

Is there a place I can download a free trial version or something of the sort? I am in an Advertising class and in charge of creating the magazine print ad... I am going to sketch out the outline and then scan it onto a computer to hopefully digitalize the color etc. with photoshop. (Which I cant afford bc I am a poor college student lol)

Or any other suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks!Photoshop ???????
You can get a free trial from Adobe.com. But since you are a student, you should talk to your school about helping you get the student license version (also called the educational version). It's not free, but it's a lot cheaper (abut 1/3 the cost of the retail package). Even if your school can't help you get the program, you can order it from any of several academic resellers, such as JourneyEd.com or AcademicSuperStore. You will still need to prove you are a student, but your school will be able to help with that.

Another alternative is to get Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, which is the consumer product and may well be adequate for you. It's less than $100 (around $80 on Amazon.com). But I hope you already have some experience using these programs, or you will have to spend time learning how they work too.

One other alternative is to download gimp. www.gimp.org. It's a free Photoshop-like image editor, probably the best of the legal OpenSource programs out there. There is a learning curve, of course, because it's not completely like Photoshop. But it might be worth the try, since you can get it immediately.

Good luck, and I hope that helps!Photoshop ???????

It's free...and does everything Photoshop does including using a lot of the same plugins and filters.

If you're poor college student, you're entitled to purchase photoshop at an educational discount. Check at your school and on the internet for educational pricing

I find a lot of brushes set are saved to adobe and not to a zip. Is there a way to open them in adobe or to convert them to a zip so that I can download them into my photoshop program?PHOTOSHOP HELP: How do you change brush files from adobe to a zip?
Your question is a little confusing. From my understanding you need to load your brush file into Photoshop. If this is the case then you need to locate the file - it should have an icon with a little brush and the file should end with .abr. Then Open Photoshop and go to Window - Brushes Find a little triangle and click on it. It should open a pop up window. Point to Load Brushes and direct it to your brush file. That should do it.PHOTOSHOP HELP: How do you change brush files from adobe to a zip?
You really need to know and understand what a ';zip'; file is. A zip file is created, generally by WinZip, and is a ';compressed'; file of the original file(s). A zip file is totally useless except for transmitting and storage as it will be smaller in size than the original file size sum of its content. The files within a zip file must be extracted, in other words -- uncompressed, to be used.

If you still want to know how to ';convert them'; or compress them into a zip file, download WinZip. With some study, you will be able to compress files as you might desire.
Maybe I need more coffee, but your question isn't making any sense to me.

Let me see if this helps: Brushes that are available for download are usually presented as a zip file. You download that zip file, then extract it and place the brushes (they are .abr files) into the brushes folder.

From inside Photoshop, you then load the brushes into the tool.

    You're welcome. Experiment. Report Abuse

try adjusting contrast and sharpening it, newspapers are usually way to dark right?, so lighten it up a little bit with contrast, for the scan lines, just try cropping the picture a little bit to deal with the side lines, makes the picture look more professional also
Check the input settings on your scanner. Many scanners have settings that can reduce some of the problems you're discussing. Look for something like Image Type: Black %26amp; White (or Color if that's what you have) Document or similar. You might try different settings to see which is the best for your particular scanner. Dr. Sam's answer that includes placing the picture at an angle on the scanner is worth a try as well.

In Photoshop it may be better to blur the image (Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur) a little instead of sharpening. Sharpening would tend to just exaggerate the problems. Using Levels (Layer/New Adjustment Layer/Levels) would probably help as well.
not too sure. just try scanning it from a better scanner. or just ask the newspaper to borrow the actual picture and just have that.because they must have an original copy.

How do I change my tabby cat into a white cat on photoshop?

    Hiya,

I used to use photoshop about 2 years ago and I swear I used to know a simple technique to change fur colour, that I have now forgotten.

Help? =0)How do I change my tabby cat into a white cat on photoshop?
Photoshop has no ';change fur'; function. There will be many ways to do this, and it will vary a lot from image to image what will work well. It's best if you have a high resolution (large) image to work on.

With a tabby cat your main problem is that you need to remove the pattern so it is not as simple as changing the color/brightness.

If you have large enough areas of bright/white fur you can use clone stamp tool and healing brush to cover up the dark fur.

You could also attempt to make a selection based on the dark fur (many ways to do this depending on your skill) and then with that selection selected add an adjustment layer (and the selection will be used as a mask so it only affects part of the image). What adjustments you need depend on your image - you could try to lighten it using brightness/contrast (but use curves instead if you know how) and to change the color using hue/saturation.

If you do not care a bout the pattern and simply want to remove the color from the fur you just select the fur then add the hue/saturation adjustment layer and desaturate it. It will now be white/grey/black.

If you also do not give a damn about realism you could just take a white brush and brush a slab of solid white color over your cat ;)How do I change my tabby cat into a white cat on photoshop?

When creating a halftone in Photoshop the layer locks?

At the moment i am trying to create a halftone in photoshop.

When i first open the image it's full color %26amp; the layer is unlocked.

Then i change the image to grey scale, then to Bitmap.

In Bitmap i choose the frequency %26amp; once i click okay the layer locks.

How do i unlock the layer so i can make some more changes? When creating a halftone in Photoshop the layer locks?
Bitmap mode does not support working in layers - so you must temporarily switch back to one that does, such as grayscale or RGB, for example.

How can I see the dimensions of a layer in photoshop? Who wants 10 points?

I know how to see the dimensions of the whole file by going to image, image size... but how can I see the width and height of a specific layer without having to look at the rulers? I'm specifically trying to do this with a rectangular image in a page layout, not text or anything organically shaped. How can I see the dimensions of a layer in photoshop? Who wants 10 points?
Use the Info tab - either Window pulldown menu --%26gt; Info, or hit F8. It has a flyout Palette Options menu at the top right that will let you set it for Pixels, Inches, etc.

Once you have done that, go to your layer you want to see the size of and load it as a selection (hold the ctrl key and click on the layer - the marching ants should be around the layer image). The info palette will show you the exact size of your selection.

This works with irregular layers as well, though, obviously it only provides overall height and width. How can I see the dimensions of a layer in photoshop? Who wants 10 points?
I'm sure there's a better way but I just select that layer then go copy and then go to 'new' and the 'new' page will generally automatically be the same proportions as the layer you've just copied.

There is probably a much easier way but thats what I do! :)

If I want to cut and paste a picture on photoshop how do I blend my picture in?

I don't want my picture to look like I cut and pasted. I took to sepereate pics of my dogs at different times and want them on a card together, but when I cut and paste and add a background it looks so fake.If I want to cut and paste a picture on photoshop how do I blend my picture in?
Send them to me and I can edit them. Send me an email and we can hook up. I'll show my work too if you want.

You can use the hard eraser around the edges by hand (it's not so painstaking as it may seem). Before doing that, though, use your magnifying tool to balloon the picture up so you can get a decent ';cut';. Be sure to adjust the size of the hard eraser to account for more detailed edging. For instance, use a 3 for the much smaller areas, and use anywhere from 5 up to 11 for the more ';obtuse'; areas.

If the cut object still looks rather ';choppy'; around the edges (likely not), consider ';lightly'; placing a gaussian blur to it.

When you get to that very last step and it just seems ';a bit out of place';, you could apply a very thin layer of noise to it. It will bring down the rest of the picture quality to match up with the lesser quality of the inserted object (last ditch effort, though). If I want to cut and paste a picture on photoshop how do I blend my picture in?
In order to make the edging good, you have to use the pen tool to outline, not the magnetic lasso or magic wand. Google ';photoshop pen outline tutorial'; and you should get thousands of results.

    Enjoy :)

  • What is the best Photoshop to use to edit drawings?

I need to know so I can plan on getting it. I love drawing and I would like to upgrade my drawings and edit them on the computer! What is the best Photoshop to use to edit drawings?
Photoshop would be a good way to go. I work on both Photoshop and Illustrator. With Photoshop you can scan in your drawings and edit them. I suggest looking into a wacom tablet which comes with a pen that you can use like a writing pen. I find it easier because you can select a brush from the tool box in Photoshop which can give you many different effects like brush strokes, water color etc. The pen will give you the freedom much like a pencil or brush. I hope this helps.

Good luck! What is the best Photoshop to use to edit drawings?
I'm not sure that Photoshop is the right application for this. You might look into Adobe Illustrator instead.
If you want something free/opensource try gimp.

How do I put myself on a beach by using photoshop CS3 and CS4?

I have a beach picture like a background, picture of me and my friend and we are a white background. Can someone help me with this? How do I put myself on a beach by using photoshop CS3 and CS4?
There are too many stages to post on here.

You should use one of these tutorials:

Good luckHow do I put myself on a beach by using photoshop CS3 and CS4?
It would be a painstaking task without any special software (apart from photoshop). You could use the slice tool, slice you and your friend's bodies, copy, then paste onto the beach background.

Slicing would be incredibly hard, especially detailed parts of the body, like hair, but it would be more useful if you use Vertus fluid mask. It's worth $149, can work as a single program, or as a plug-in for photoshop. They let you use a 30-day demo, wit full features, so you could use it for your picture.
You can do this a few ways. If you like using the eraser, take the photo of you and your friend. Unlock the background layer by double-clicking it and hitting OK. Now select the eraser tool, set the hardness to around 40%, and choose a master diameter/brush size that suits the image.

Go to View %26lt; Zoom In for a more precise edit. Erase the white background of your photo. It also helps to use the Magic Wand tool. Set the tolerance to 10-15 and select bits and pieces of the white background. To make multiple selections, press the SHIFT key. It's a little difficult to explain, so I hope these tutorials will help you:

1.) Pen Tool, Magic Wand, and Eraser: http://outofbounds.vintagepeace.com/cutt…

2.) Quick Masking and Eraser: http://outofbounds.vintagepeace.com/quic…

Once you're finished getting rid of the white background, CTRL A and copy and paste the cutout onto the beach background. Hope this helped.

    This is super easy!

also, what i have done before it to layer the beach (or whatever background) over your image. The adjust the opacity and blend mode to whatever helps you see you the best...then you a soft eraser brush and erase the part of the picture you don't want then merge then together. Blur the edges a bit so it looks natural..before you blend you may want to add some shadow! super easy!
Find the pen tool on the left.

when it is selected go to the top of the screen and select the outline button.

draw round the image of you point by point (drag to create a curve).

    on the right select paths.

Right click work path and click make selection

    copy to clipboard.

    Open beach image

    paste.
    1) Get in car

    2) Drive to beach

    3) Take real picture

    4) You won't lose respect this way

How can I cut hair from a picture using Adobe photoshop?

I tried using the lasso tool but is there a way to do it where it looks natural and not pieced out from the picture? How can I cut hair from a picture using Adobe photoshop?
If the background is a different colour, use the magic wand tool.

Set it to about 30 tolerance, click on the background then delete it.How can I cut hair from a picture using Adobe photoshop?
If you are using 7.0 click the filter and extract tool. It may take a little practice but it is the most accurate method. You use it by marking the selected area and using the fill tool.
You could use the liquify filter and warp it that way. I've never tried cut out hair, so I don't know if it would work.
Yes, try the above suggestions. Just remember it takes time, you have to proceed slowly for good results.

TheAdobre is an English fashion photographer who has written some fantastic books on this subject. His name is Martin Evening and his latest book is called:

    ';Adobe Photoshop for photographers';.

Try your library as well. Personally I stay clear of the ';For Dummies'; books. You're NOT a dummy and I find these books 'talk down to you' rather than provide clear instructions.

Hint for airbrushing, there is a special brush which you can set at a low opacity and make very slight changes. Personally I use the ';Healing Brush'; (I us Adobe CS3) . Apply at 100 % and immediate go to EDIT-%26gt;FADE HEALING BRUSH.

If the shots are from identical positions, load one of the images into a window in photoshop. Then load the other in another window and copy it using ctrl-A, then ctrl-c. Go back to the original image and create a new layer. Copy the second image you loaded into the new layer. Now, using the layer window, adjust the opacity to reveal as much of the underneath layer as you need to superimpose the two images.

How can I blur a bit of a photo in photoshop?

Use the magic wand to select the section, right click to add or subtract seletions... then once all is in the zone use the blur tool listed under the left hand side under one of the options. Hope this helps! How can I blur a bit of a photo in photoshop?
First, always . cntrl +J, or apple +J to duplicate original layer, then apply a gaussen blur to top layer, then go to top of the drop down menus, select filter, go down to blur, then select gauusen blur (my fave, but experiment with others)

apply the blur, it will blur entire image, NEXT get the eraser, and reduce opacity of eraser to like 15%, and reduce the hardness to like 10% . now go and erase the areas of the picture that you want to remain in focus, by having the eraser at 15% opacity you can have greater control in erasing, this will tend to give more accurate results than the magic wand. good luck, you can send an email to me with more questions, zorro1701@excite.com
I'm sure that in the list of tools on the left there is a blur or smudge tool. Make the brush size really big but quite weak then use it on the background.
if you crop the area you dont want to be blurred. Then choose inverse selection and go over the rest with the blur tool. Hope that helps =)

Click in Filter/ blur / blur.

    That's all!!!!
It is far easier to isolate the background when shooting the original than to make adjustments later.

How do i convert a picture to greyscale in adobe photoshop CS3?

I just got this program today. I'm trying to get my photo all black and white except for roses. ThanksHow do i convert a picture to greyscale in adobe photoshop CS3?
Ah! So you want the answer to one of the most frequently asked Photoshop questions, how to make the image black and white (or rather grayscale) with just one part color. Here is my tutorial (I've answered this so many times, I've kept a text file just for this purpose.) There are other methods (Photoshop almost always has more than one way to do something), but this is a ';non-destructive'; method.

How to make image black and white with just one part color:

First, with your file open, go to File%26gt; Save As, rename the file, select Photoshop for the file type, and select where you want to save it to. Then hit Save. You always want to work on a copy of your image, leaving the original image alone.

With your Layers palette open (always keep that open, it's just too useful!) grab the layer and drag it to the bottom of the palette onto the icon that looks like a square page with a corner turned. This is the New layer button, what you are doing is creating a new layer from your original layer. (note, if your original layer has a little lock icon by it and its name is Background, double click on it and it will give you a little dialog box that will have a new name of Layer 0. You can rename it or accept that name, just click ok. Now you can edit that layer if you need to.)

Click on the top layer (the new one you created) to make sure it is selected. Go to Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Desaturate (this is one way to make something that was color into black and white, actually shades of gray. In Photoshop there are many ways to do something, so experiment!). This layer should now be black and white. To see that the bottom layer is still color, click the little eye icon next to the layer thumbnail in the Layers Palette for the top layer. This hides the layer and will show the layer underneath. Now click the square with the eye icon to turn it back on.

With the top layer (the black and white one) highlighted (selected), click on the icon on the bottom of the Layers Palette that looks like a circle in a square. That's the Layer Mask icon. You have just applied a Layer Mask to the top layer. You will see a little box with an outline around it appear to the right of the Layer thumbnail. It should be white, but if it's black, that's okay, you'll just do the opposite of what I am about to tell you.

Okay, make sure that little box is selected (click on it.) It's important that the Layer mask is selected because you are going to paint on the mask. Click on the brush tool. Down at the bottom of the Tools palette, make sure the two squares show black on top and white for the square in back. If not, there's tiny squares underneath, click on those to reset the foreground and background colors to black and white. If you have white on top, click on the curved arrow above the squares or hit X on your keyboard to switch them.

With black selected for your brush color, and making sure the Layer MASK thumbnail is selected, check that the opacity (it's up in the options bar at the top of your image) is set for 100%. Now start painting over the part you want in color in your picture. You will see color showing through. If you paint more than you want, hit X to switch the brush to white and paint the mask back in. Also if your brush is too big you can make it smaller hitting the open bracket key: [. If you want to make the brush bigger, hit the close bracket: ].

When you are happy with the results, go to File%26gt;Save As and rename. (Or just Save.) If you want to be able to upload this image, you need to go to Layer%26gt;Flatten and then save as a .jpg.

Have fun. Experiment. Read some how-to books and you will get more ideas.
